Want to Do · 〜たいです

Some Things We Do.
Some Things We Want to Do.

〜たいです

We go somewhere. We eat something. We speak with someone. Then one small change lets Japanese describe not only the action — but the desire behind it.

FROM ACTION TO INTENTION
Learning support
01 Meet the idea

Want.
Don't want.
What do you want?

Japanese can now move beyond describing what you do. With 〜たいです, you can begin describing what you want to do.

〜たいです
want to do
〜たくないです
do not want to do
何なにを したいですか。
What do you want to do?
02 Hear the pattern

Five familiar actions.
Five new intentions.

Listen first. The action remains familiar. What changes is the speaker's relationship to it.

Ikitai desu.
I want to go.
Tabetai desu.
I want to eat.
Nomitai desu.
I want to drink.
Mitai desu.
I want to see / watch.
Hanashitai desu.
I want to speak.

03 From doing to wanting

One action.
One change of intention.

Nihongo o benkyō shimasu.
I study Japanese.
Nihongo o benkyō shitai desu.
I want to study Japanese.

勉強します describes the action. 勉強したいです adds your desire to do it.

04 Build the form

Start with the polite verb.
Remove ます. Add たいです.

At this stage, you do not need a large conjugation table. Use the familiar ます form as your starting point.

Familiar form
go
→
Remove ます · add たいです
want to go
Familiar form
eat
→
Remove ます · add たいです
want to eat
05 Same world · different intention

Going becomes
wanting to go.

Nihon e ikimasu.
I go to Japan.
Nihon e ikitai desu.
I want to go to Japan.
Kōhī o nomimasu.
I drink coffee.
Kōhī o nomitai desu.
I want to drink coffee.

06 Recombine what you know

A desire can have
a place, person or time.

〜たいです does not erase your earlier Japanese. It joins it. Places, companions and times can now become part of what you want to do.

Kyōto de shashin o toritai desu.
I want to take photographs in Kyoto.
Tōkyō de sushi o tabetai desu.
I want to eat sushi in Tokyo.
Kafe de kōhī o nomitai desu.
I want to drink coffee at a café.
Nihon de Nihongo o hanashitai desu.
I want to speak Japanese in Japan.
Tomodachi to eiga o mitai desu.
I want to watch a movie with a friend.
Shūmatsu ni Kyōto e ikitai desu.
I want to go to Kyoto this weekend.

07 Ask about intention

What do you
want to do?

A question about desire is different from asking what someone usually does. It invites them to talk about what they would like to do next.

Nani o shitai desu ka?
What do you want to do?
Nihongo o motto benkyō shitai desu.
I want to study Japanese more.
08 Ask about destination

Where do you
want to go?

The question word changes, but 〜たいです stays in place.

Doko e ikitai desu ka?
Where do you want to go?
Kyōto e ikitai desu.
I want to go to Kyoto.
09 Everyday wants

What do you want
to eat or drink?

Something to eat
Nani o tabetai desu ka?
What do you want to eat?
Rāmen o tabetai desu.
I want to eat ramen.
Something to drink
Nani o nomitai desu ka?
What do you want to drink?
Ocha o nomitai desu.
I want to drink tea.
11 Bring IJ-0085 back

A desire can also
have a reason.

IJ-0085 taught you how to ask why. Now that question can reach into what someone wants to do.

Question
Dōshite Nihongo o benkyō shitai desu ka?
Why do you want to study Japanese?
Reason
Nihon de hanashitai desu kara.

13 Hear another person

A question becomes
a conversation.

In each exchange, A is the female voice you have already heard. B answers with a different male voice.

Your Japanese is becoming personal
“Knowing what someone does tells you about their day. Knowing what they want begins to tell you about them.”

You can now describe an action, place it somewhere, give it a time, share it with someone, explain how often it happens, say how long it lasts, give it a beginning and end, explain why — and now say whether you want it.

WHAT → WHERE → WHEN → WITH WHOM → HOW → HOW OFTEN → HOW LONG → FROM / TO → WHY / REASON → WANT / INTENTION

15 Real Japan mission

Give tomorrow
one intention.

Look at an ordinary day ahead of you. Choose one thing you genuinely want to do. It does not need to be impressive.

Ashita, nani o shitai desu ka?
What do you want to do tomorrow?

Perhaps you want to drink coffee somewhere quiet. Perhaps you want to walk. Perhaps you want to speak Japanese to one person. The grammar is small. The answer is yours.

A final thought

The Things
We Want.

Where do you want to go? What do you want to learn? Who do you want to speak with?

Sometimes a future begins with nothing more complicated than 〜たいです.
