IJ-0020 · COMBINATION SOUNDS
ちゃ・ちゅ・ちょ

A small ゃ・ゅ・ょ.
A clear new rhythm.

You already know ち. Now watch what happens when a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ follows it. Two written shapes move together as one compact sound: ちゃ, ちゅ, ちょ.

LISTEN FIRST

Three sounds. One simple idea.

The small kana does not create a second beat. It changes the sound that comes before it. Listen before you analyze.

ちゃ

cha

Hear it as one compact sound, not ち・や.

ちゅ

chu

Keep the sound together. The ゅ is small for a reason.

ちょ

cho

One flowing sound rather than ち・よ.

BUILD THE SOUND

Size changes the rhythm.

With a full-size や・ゆ・よ, you hear two beats. With a small ゃ・ゅ・ょ, the sounds combine. Standard Japanese charts list ちゃ・ちゅ・ちょ as the contracted sounds built from ち.

COMBINATION WRITING STUDIO · 拗音

One combination at a time.

The purpose here is writing—not sound. Select ちゃ, ちゅ or ちょ, then play the stroke order. Watch ち first and the small ゃ・ゅ・ょ second.

ACTIVE COMBINATION
ちゃ
ち + small ゃ → ちゃ

Write ち first. Then write a visibly smaller ゃ beside it. The pair is read together.

Select → Play → Watch → Trace → Write

LOOK CLOSELY

The second kana becomes smaller.

The stroke order itself does not change because the kana is small. What changes is its written size and its relationship to ち.

JAPANESE AROUND THE LANGUAGE

A sound you can meet over tea.

おちゃ
tea

Not a ceremonial postcard—just an ordinary cup on an ordinary day. This is where the new sound begins to feel useful.

VOCABULARY

A HUMAN MOMENT · USE IT YOURSELF

Your first tiny café exchange.

You do not need a full sentence. Point gently to the drink or item you want and say:

これ、お願いします。
これ、おねがいします。
This one, please.

これ means “this.” お願いします is a polite way to ask for something. Together, this is an extremely useful beginner pattern when the thing you want is visible.

WITH TODAY'S WORD
おちゃを おねがいします。
Tea, please.

Here おちゃ is “tea,” を marks what you are asking for, and お願いします makes the request polite.

HOW TO USE IT · ちょっと

ちょっと means more than “a little.”

ちょっと
a little · a moment · a softener

For a complete beginner, remember this first: ちょっと often makes Japanese feel less abrupt. Its exact English meaning changes with the situation.

SITUATION 1 · ASK SOMEONE TO WAIT
ちょっと まってください。
Please wait a moment.

ちょっと = a moment · まって = wait · ください = please.

Beginner rule: Do not try to translate ちょっと with one English word every time. First notice what it is doing in the situation: “a little,” “a moment,” or making a request/response gentler.
HEAR IT IN REAL JAPANESE · ONE LOGICAL CAFÉ SCENE

A short café exchange.

This is one continuous situation. The customer is male and the staff member is female, matching the café photograph above.

1 · CUSTOMER · MALE
Tea, please.
The customer orders tea politely. おちゃ = tea · を marks what he wants · おねがいします = please / I’d like.
2 · STAFF · FEMALE
Yes. Tea, right?
The staff member confirms the order. ですね gently checks or confirms what she heard.
3 · STAFF · FEMALE
Please wait a moment.
Now ちょっと has a clear job: the staff member asks the customer to wait briefly while she prepares the order.
4 · CUSTOMER · MALE
Yes, that's fine.
The customer accepts the wait. だいじょうぶです here means “that’s fine / no problem.”
FOLLOW THE SITUATION

Order → confirmation → request to wait → acceptance. This is why ちょっと belongs here. It is not a random vocabulary example; it performs a real function inside the exchange.

LISTENING CHALLENGE

Can you catch ちゅ and ちゃ?

Play the three lines without looking at the English first.

I'd like to order, please.

Certainly. Go ahead.

One tea, please.
